Even when there is gridlock in Washington, D.C., the federal government, by law, must be funded to remain operating. The House Appropriations Committee, the committee I am assigned to, plays a pivotal role in how hardworking taxpayer dollars are allocated at the federal level. I thought Iowans should have a seat at the table during this process; and I am proud to be that voice.

People come to Washington, D.C., from all across the country - many of them are good people that are here for the right reasons. We debate the issues and while we may have disagreements, at the end of the day, most are committed to representing their constituents back home and getting things done.

Nearly half of Americans who bought individual insurance plans from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or other marketplaces say they struggle to pay their monthly premiums. On top of that, the White House admits premium hikes are only expected to increase in 2016.

It's no secret. There are real problems with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) - commonly referred to as Obamacare. Even President Obama has admitted this. Last Tuesday, I was proud to stand with my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to block this proposed rule and demand we go back to the drawing board. I supported H.R. 1732: The Regulatory Integrity Protection Act, or the reset bill, because it’s commonsense, smart legislation.

This past week was National Small Business Week and I used this opportunity to visit with small businesses all across Iowa's Third Congressional District. I know, and certainly the hardworking job creators of Iowa know, how important our local small businesses are to our communities. Truth be told, every week should be small business week, because they are the life blood of our towns and cities all across Iowa.

James Madison, in Federalist No. 57, mocked the idea that the federal government would exempt themselves from laws that applied to other people. They “can make no law,” he wrote, “which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society.”

The House finished its first 100 days of the 114th Congress last week, and I am proud to report we have hit the ground running. Things have changed for the better. We are working together to find solutions and deliver results, which hardworking taxpayers expect and deserve. Everyone benefits from a government that listens to its people; I promise I will always be accessible and I will always listen to you.

This was an odd week in Washington; a senior government official shocked the nation with an honest answer to a question I asked her. While I was questioning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldaña during a hearing, she interrupted me and confirmed what many have long feared: the Obama Administration expects its directives and policies to take precedence over the laws of the land.
