James Madison, in Federalist No. 57, mocked the idea that the federal government would exempt themselves from laws that applied to other people. They “can make no law,” he wrote, “which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society.”

The House finished its first 100 days of the 114th Congress last week, and I am proud to report we have hit the ground running. Things have changed for the better. We are working together to find solutions and deliver results, which hardworking taxpayers expect and deserve. Everyone benefits from a government that listens to its people; I promise I will always be accessible and I will always listen to you.

This was an odd week in Washington; a senior government official shocked the nation with an honest answer to a question I asked her. While I was questioning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldaña during a hearing, she interrupted me and confirmed what many have long feared: the Obama Administration expects its directives and policies to take precedence over the laws of the land.

I think we all identify the word recess with school - probably elementary school when we would have a little bit of time during the middle of the day to head outside and have fun. Congress does go into “recess” but I turn this time into a work period where I travel all across Iowa’s Third Congressional District to meet with and listen to you and your neighbors.

One of my top priorities in Congress is to provide oversight and demand accountability on behalf of hardworking Iowa taxpayers. We can have policy debates and disagreements, but we must demand better management of our federal government at every level.

I believe one of my most important jobs in Congress is to bring the accountability and common sense to Washington that Iowans expect and deserve out of their government. Sadly, one of America’s most iconic agencies – the Secret Service – is in need of just that.

Earlier this week at Underwood Elementary School in Pottawattamie County, I met with a bunch of fourth-graders clamoring for a national pizza day featuring Iowa’s famous taco pizza. I am afraid I disappointed the kids when I tried to steer the conversation to other subjects.

As Iowans know, President Obama has acted unilaterally to create his own set of immigrations laws – creating a pathway for 5 million illegal immigrants to remain in the country and work.
February 26, 2015 Weekly Report
As I travel around the Third District in southwest Iowa, I see what drives our state – hardworking Iowans that control their own lives. Our state is rightfully proud of its rich agricultural history, but it is also a part of our future. My mission is simple; make sure you have a government that works for you, one that is efficient, effective and accountable.
